The Firm
A boutique law firm in San Diego, practicing at the intersection of law, tax, transactions, and private wealth.
Overview
KPLAN Law Group, APC advises business owners, companies, entrepreneurs, and families on corporate and transactional matters, trusts and estates, tax, and immigration. Our clients are typically privately held companies and the individuals and families behind them, in San Diego, throughout California, and across the Pacific.
The firm was founded by an attorney who is also a Certified Public Accountant, and it operates as an affiliated law firm of KYJ, LLP, Certified Public Accountants. That combination is the reason the firm exists: the legal and tax dimensions of a transaction, an estate plan, or a relocation are handled together, by people who share a file and a point of view.
Our approach
We start by understanding the whole picture: the business and how it makes money, the family and how it is organized, the assets and where they are located, and the plans that are already in place. Only then do we recommend a structure. Most of our engagements are ongoing relationships rather than single projects, and we are deliberately small so that the attorney who designs a plan is the one who carries it out.
Our advice is written in plain English. Where a matter requires a technical opinion or a complex document, we explain what it does and why it is drafted the way it is. Clients should understand their own plan.
What We Stand For
Five words that describe how we practice.
Knowledge
Our advice rests on technical command of corporate law, the tax code, and immigration practice, kept current and applied with judgment. We do not guess, and we say so when a question needs more study.
Protection
Clients come to us with things worth protecting: a company, a family’s wealth, the right to live and work in this country. Our documents and structures are built to hold up when they are tested.
Leadership
A good advisor does more than answer the question asked. We help clients see the decision in front of them, weigh the options, and choose with confidence.
Advocacy
In a negotiation, before a taxing authority, or in front of an immigration officer, we represent our clients’ interests firmly and professionally.
Navigation
Business, tax, and immigration law intersect in complicated ways, especially across borders. We chart the route from where a client is to where they want to be, and stay with them along the way.
KYJ, LLP
KPLAN Law Group is an affiliated law firm of KYJ, LLP, a firm of Certified Public Accountants. The two firms are separate professional entities and serve clients under separate engagements, but they share a philosophy and, where clients ask, a team.
In practice this means that a business sale is structured by the attorney and modeled by the CPAs at the same time; that an estate plan is drafted with the gift tax return and the ongoing trust accounting already assigned; and that a client’s tax preparer can pick up the phone and get a legal answer. For clients who want a single, coordinated advisory relationship, the affiliation removes the gap between law and accounting.
San Diego and across the Pacific
We are based in San Diego and serve clients throughout California. A substantial part of our practice is cross-border, particularly between the United States and Korea and the broader Asia-Pacific region: Korean companies establishing U.S. operations, families investing in or relocating to the United States, and U.S. businesses and individuals with interests abroad. Our team works in English and Korean, and we coordinate with foreign counsel and accountants when a matter requires it.
